Construction site accidents, especially those involving large construction machinery, pose a serious safety risk. Current training methods, which are mainly centred around PowerPoint presentations and short on-site briefings, do not adequately capture the complexity of the working environment. In particular, the challenges posed by confined spaces or obstructions that restrict safe routes, as well as machine operators' limited fields of vision and blind spots, are often not adequately communicated. As a result, employees often underestimate the actual dangers and restrictions.
This is precisely where the BuildsaVeR project comes in: By developing an innovative Virtual Reality (VR) training app, the safety awareness of employees is increased. The focus is on conveying the perspective of machine operators and their restricted field of vision. By changing their perspective in immersive VR, participants gain a deep understanding of the challenges faced by operators and the potentially hazardous situations for other employees on construction sites, which contributes to a lasting improvement in safety awareness.
In this talk, we will demonstrate how XR can revolutionize workplace safety and highlight its impact using the BuildsaVeR project as a concrete example.
