A XR-Enabled Study into the Societal and Economic Benefits of BVLOS UAS Integration

The aviation sector, particularly in the U.S., is highly complex, with the introduction of Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) adding further intricacies. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued the first airworthiness certificate for civil UAS in 2005, and subsequent regulations, such as FAA Part 107 (2016) and the first Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) waiver (2019), have accelerated UAS integration.

This presentation explores the societal and economic benefits of BVLOS UAS operations in urban environments, supported by XR technologies. A mixed-methods study, including interviews with subject matter experts (SMEs) and a survey of 385 individuals, aims to understand how UAS can drive growth while ensuring safety. Challenges like complex regulations and navigational hurdles in BVLOS operations are addressed through XR, offering immersive training simulations and real-time flight data visualization. This presentation aims to promote UAS integration, highlighting XR's role in improving safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
